Support the Operational Guidance
During an interagency meeting held in November 1999 on infant and young child feeding in emergencies, the need for concise operational guidance on key ‘dos and don'ts’ for emergency relief staff and policy makers was highlighted. It was recognised that the key to the success of this document would be wide ownership by all the major agencies involved in humanitarian response so that it could be used to promote good practice and co-ordination.
The interagency working group on Infant Feeding in Emergencies, working within the UN Sub Committee on Nutrition Working Group on Emergencies, prepared version 1.0 of the Operational Guidance. It has since been updated by the IFE Core Group and version 2.0 was produced in 2006.
Two training manuals to assist with the implementation of the operational guidance are available: Infant Feeding in Emergencies Module 1 and Module 2.
