Top 10 underreported crises in 2006

Published:

According to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the impact of tuberculosis and the devastation caused by wars in the Central African Republic (CAR) and Chechnya are among the top 10 most under-reported medical emergencies of 2006. "The violence and suffering that MSF medical staff witness is too often seen as a norm that does not merit media attention," said Jean-Michel Piedagnel, executive director of MSF UK. Despite intense efforts to raise the profile of the ongoing conflict in the CAR, the country received almost no media attention in 2006, said MSF's report. Since November 2005, fighting has occurred between government troops and various rebel groups in the north west of the country and as many as 100,000 civilians have been forced to flee their homes.
