The Cerebral Palsy (CP) Network held the first meeting of its kind in Malawi!
ENN was able to attend and provide insights through Senior Technical Associate, Natasha Lelijveld. After listening to keynote speakers, panel discussions and break-out sessions the meeting successfully identified four critical areas for collaboration and action within the CP network:
- Early identification: The Malawian healthcare system lacks standardised early identification tools outside of research or pilot projects and healthcare workers lack knowledge regarding CP. These discussions set the stage for actionable steps toward improving early diagnosis and providing training of relevant nutrition and health, ensuring that children with CP are identified as early as possible and referred for appropriate care.
- Research: The current gap of research and data on CP makes it more challenging to shape effective policies and interventions. Research findings also often fail to reach government officials and decision-makers, calling for stronger collaboration between stakeholders to ensure research is communicated effectively and can influence policy.
- Clinical care: Care is not standardised, lacking protocols and evidence-based guidelines. Due to the complexity of CP and its comorbidities, a multidisciplinary approach involving rehabilitation, medical care, nutrition, education, palliative care, and psychosocial support is essential.
- Advocacy and awareness: To effectively promote the rights of children with CP, it is crucial for stakeholders to enhance collaboration and present a unified message. Raising awareness can be achieved through strategic use of media, the sharing of success stories, and a focused effort on World CP Day to further highlight the rights and challenges faced by children with CP.
Children with CP face multiple challenges in life, including swallowing difficulties and stigma, which can lead to chronic and life-threatening malnutrition. The creation of the Malawi CP Network will take forward these action points and serve as an example to other settings.
